Walking your dog yields some great benefits for you as well as your pooch, and the activity has its own week October 1-7 to call attention to its advantages. In addition to being good exercise that helps you both keep your weight in check, walking your pup lets you both socialize. It also helps keep Fido from getting bored and engaging in destructive behaviors.

Dog parks are the perfect spot to walk your dog for a bit and then take him off-leash to romp in a safe area. Our real estate agents suggest visiting the following dog parks in Stark and Summit counties during Walk Your Dog Week and beyond.

  • Dick Goddard Dog Park at Ariss Park - 2520 Wise Rd., North Canton, OH 44720
Located within 80-acre Ariss Park near North Canton homes for sale, Dick Goddard Dog Park has separate areas for large and small dogs. Those over 25 pounds have a 1.3-acre area, and small dogs weighing 25 pounds or less have a half acre of space. You'll also find a nearly two-acre off-leash dog run and water fountains for both of you.

  • Veterans Park Dog Park - 1714 Schneider St. NE, Canton, OH 44721

And if Fido gets overheated or dirty, you can even cool him off or clean him up at one of the park's six dog showers open in spring, summer, and fall. Small dogs under 30 pounds have 1.5 acres to play in, and dogs over 30 have 2.5 acres of their own.

  • Akron Dog Park 499 Memorial Parkway, Akron, OH 44310
Operated by the non-profit group Better Akron Recreation for Canines, Akron Dog Park was founded in 2004. Located near Akron homes for sale, the park has a separate small dog park for pets who weigh 30 pounds or less. It features fenced-in grass/gravel terrain where dogs can run and play, as well as agility obstacles and play equipment so they can have even more fun. Sit on a bench in the shade and watch your dog romp, and take him to cool off at the seasonal doggie drink station as needed.

  • Portage Lakes State Park - 5031 Manchester Rd., Akron, OH 44319
    Portage Lakes State Park
is a popular destination for sailing, jet skiing, water skiing, and wildlife watching. These activities make the 411-acre park well worth a trip, and if you're a dog owner, it will probably become one of your favorites to visit. It has a dog park that's partially fenced with room for your pooch to frolic, and there's even an unfenced dog swim area to help him cool off or to get more exercise.

  • Keyser Dog Park  - 550 Keyser Pkwy., Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44221
